Obedience
Method: Controlled observation in which obedience was measured in terms of voltage given. PP was seen as obedient if they gave 450 volts.
PP's were always the teacher (fixed lottery) and saw the learner being strapped to a chair and electrodes. PP's were given a 45 v trial to show it was real.
At 300 v the learner banged on the wall and there after, gave no response. If the pp turned to the experiment, he would insist they must continue.
100% of the pp's went to 300 v and 65% went to 450 v. 26/40 pp's were obedient and 14/40 were disobedient.
Extreme stress signs were shown such as sweating; trembling; nervous laughing and stuttering. 3 pp's had seizures.
