Scientists have done lots of experiments to prove that motility is essential for Campylobacter to cause disease drowsiness headaches( disease, drowsiness, headaches ). By deleting inserting( deleting, inserting ) the piece of DNA which codes for the flagella ribosome cell wall capsule( flagella, ribosome, cell wall, capsule ), we can see that the bacteria are worse at colonising the gut brain skin( gut, brain, skin ). Bacteria that cannot colonise the gut cannot cause disease.

Chemotaxis is the movement of cells in response to chemical physical( chemical, physical ) signals. These signals can attract cells (chemoattractants) or repel them (chemorepellents). Campylobacter randomly change direction occasionally. The cells will move further down a chemotactic osmotic physical( chemotactic, osmotic, physical ) gradient, than up one. This means, cells will gradually move towards a favourable damaging neutral( favourable, damaging, neutral ) environment in the presence of chemotactic signals, and will continually move randomly in an ordered fashion( randomly, in an ordered fashion ) without them.
