Cruttenden ( 1979, 1989, 1999 ), divided the acquisition of inflections into 3 stages:
1) Children memorise words ( on an individual basis, in groups ).
2) Awareness of general rules of inflections develops.
( Overgeneralisations, Undergeneralisation, Predicate statements ) occur at this stage, eg. 'runned' instead of 'ran'
3) Correct inflections are used.
