The detective ( fiction, writing ) was born in the mid 19th century. In the 1920s, the detective story became very ( popular, known ). It followed very definite rules:
- The scene was set in a ( closed, close ) space (a train, a ( manor, minor ), etc...)
- There was a ( murder, murter ), a restricted number of ( suspects, culprits ), a detective leading the ( investigation, survey ), the final unveiling of the ( enigma, myth ).
In the US, the "Hard-boiled" fiction appeared in the mid 20s. ( Thrillers, Billy Jean ) depicted the reality of American city life (crime, violence, ( corruption, charities ), and vice).
A new type of detective was born: the private ( eye, ear ), or private detective, who is tough, ( unscrupulous, scrupulous ), and sometimes violent.
