Scientists
Francisco Redi : He did experiments with meat in covered and uncovered containers. He found that life such as maggots only appear when another variable is introduced - such as flies that lay eggs.Louis Pasteur : Created a swan neck flask to test if air was an active principle, and found that it was not and that life did not appear on rich vegetable broth even after years of being used as an experiment.Robert Hooke : Was the first person to observe cells under a compound microscope. He was looking at dead cork cells and named them because of how they resembled monk rooms or monastery cells.Antony van Leeuwenhoek : Built a single lens microscope and studied pond water organisms, blood cells, and matter from his teeth. He was the first to describe single celled organisms.Schleiden and Schwann : The first studied plant nuclei and related his findings to his partner, who found similar behaviours in animal tissue. The concluded that all organisms are composed of one or more cells, but thought they were made by the crystallization of non living matter.Rudolf Virchow : Proved the second part of the two colleagues wrong by studying how bone cells could come from cartilage cells. His studies made him conclude that all cells come from cells.
