Etic, Emic, and Scholarly Sources

The following statement demonstrates which kind of approach to understanding religion: "Pope Francis recently said 'All that is good, all that is true, all that is beautiful brings us to God. Because God is good, God is beautiful, God is the truth.’"(Lifeteen, 2018).

If I were to speak upon the traditions and beliefs of a religion I do not practice, this etic perspective would be more theoretical. In Bentham’s article, he talks about his views of Christianity from the outside, his theories and opinions about why he believes Christianity isn’t believable. His perspectives are given from what he has read and researched, not what he has experienced first-hand as a true believer and follower. He stated that the Bible is “... the best evidence against God’s existence” (Bentham, 2013). He uses verses from the Bible to explain the lack of truth in them. His views on Christianity are in an etic perspective.

From an emic viewpoint, the Christian religious tradition practice of celebrating the Holy Communion can be explained as a spiritual rebirth. This is with reference to the Bible passage of Romans 5:12 that declares that, thanks to the disobedience of Adam at the Garden of Eden, all humans are sinful.
