Question 1
Question
The binomial naming system includes which of the following?
Question 2
Question
Use the following diagrams to answer the questions.Using your knowledge of taxonomy, explain the difference between the two classification systems below.
Answer
-
The difference between the two different classification systems is that the classification system to the left is in the traditional classification system. Here reptiles such as crocodiles, turtles and snakes were grouped together because of the similarities in their physical traits which traditional classifications relied on because of their lack of technology and information. However, the classification to the right is the modern taxonomy or modern way of classification. As you can see crocodiles are now grouped with birds because they have a more recent common ancestor despite having different physical characteristics. Thus grouping the crocodilians and birds together because of their larger reptile clade.

Classification initially was limited by scientific technologies. The first systems relied on which of the following identifying traits?
Answer
-
Physiology
-
Morphology
-
Genetics
-

Question 5
Question
Over 10,000 new species are discovered on Earth each year. The following choices represent different ways to understand this statement. Based on the readings and class discussion which of the following is the most reasonable connected idea.
Answer
-
Human activity has resulted in a wide variety of ecosystems being developed leading to greater evolutionary change and new species.
-
Species are constantly being discovered as our ability to understand and identify new species increases with knowledge and technology development.
-
Human activity is constantly changing ecosystems, therefore species are undergoing evolutionary change at increasing pace leading to new species.
-
Genetic diversity is increasing and resulting in new species developing as a result of pollution and climate change.
Question 6
Question
When studying diversity of organisms on earth, it becomes apparent that the diversity of living things is….
Answer
-
Essential for the survival of living organisms on earth.
-
Not essential for survival of living organisms but has resulted in a variety of unique organisms
-
Has benefited the development of the large number of ecosystems on earth.
-
Is the result only of a large number of ecosystems on earth.
Question 7
Question
Several limiting factors lead to the modern system of classification, which of the following most likely FIRST contributed significantly to the change to the new system?
Answer
-
As physical characteristics were better understood, such as homologous parts, species were being reclassified and needed to be renamed.
-
As genetics was introduced to the scientific approach to classification species no longer needed to be identified through physical traits and therefore could be re-identified.
-
As biodiversity became a greater area of study, the ecosystem of a species needed to be included in the naming system of the species.
-
As common ancestors replaced physical traits species were re-identified and therefore needed to be renamed.
