What is distance learning?

Distance learning is learning which takes place away from the confines of a traditional teacher/lecturer in a room teaching a group of students. Instead, the learning takes place at a different place to the teacher. In many cases distance learning makes use of videoconferencing so that the students can see the teacher and the teacher can see the students. Distance learning is done in some schools where only a few students want to take a particular AS or A2 level course and the school cannot justify the expense of take on a specialist teacher.
Distance learning is when students in a classroom are told to sit further away from the teacher in order to concentrate and become an independent learner. Also, distance learning sometimes takes place when there aren't many students in a classroom, allowing the teacher to spread the students out in no particular order.
