Caption: : Medicine man, also known as a shaman
Shamanism is the act of maintaining a connection with the spiritual world in a tribe. Their function was to heal and be a spiritual guide. The shaman performed spiritual rituals. They dominated prehistoric medicine, as ideas of unpredictable spirits led to a world with spiritual rituals. The medicine men however did use their common sense when it came to using natural remedies, yet when their herbs worked they would presume that it was the spiritual rituals that were healing them.

    Question
Briefly describe how prehistoric people treated illness. (5)Describe 3 points in detail or state 6Spend no more than 5 minutesAnswer in one paragraphModel answer:Prehistoric medicine was obviously not as advanced compared to the 21st century. When one became ill they believed that an evil spirit had entered their body- in order to release this spirit a highly painful technique was used by the shaman of the group, trephining. In most cases the sufferer died, meaning that it was not at all a developed procedure unlike it is today. Surgeons drill holes in peoples heads for all sorts of reasons but definitely not supernatural ones. Amulets and charms were carried around to prevent these spirts for entering their bodies as well as spiritual rituals that consisted of chanting and dancing. Despite this some useful natural remedies were used out of their initiative, to soothe a sore throat honey and herbs were used. This would have proved effective in other ways due to the honeys' anti-bacterial properties.
