DV8 Physical Theatre -
(1986) founder - Lloyd Newson
DV8's work is characterized by the desire to communicate ideas and feelings clearly and unpretentiously, often with a focus on socio-political issues.
The work challenges the limitations of dance by using any means necessary to find the most appropriate way to say something, thereby incorporating
elements of theatre, dance, film, and, increasingly, text.
It is determined to be radical yet accessible, and to take its work to as wide an audience as possible. DV8 is motivated by
artistic inspiration and creative need: these, rather than financial, organisational and touring demands dictate the creation of new works.
Its policy insists on the importance of challenging our preconceptions of what dance can, and should, address.
Its ongoing interest in how two primarily visual media can enhance one another and reach a crossover audience from within both forms.
Choreographic explorations of human behaviour.
"The one thing I look for in all of our performers is a level of authenticity," he says, "that they truly own the material. What's inside them
in relation to the themes of the piece? I want us to find a vocabulary that truly reflects something complex about people."
