- A Signalling molecule binds to receptor on the plasma membrane of target cell
- This activates the G protein.
- The G Protein activates Adenyl cyclase enzymes
- Activated Adenyl Cyclase enzymes catalyse formation of cAMP from ATP
- cAMP activates PKA (protein kinase A)
- PKA catalyses the phosphorylation of many other enzymes, hydrolysing ATP in the process
- Glycogen becomes converted into glucose
- May phosphorylate other proteins
- This then enters the nucleus and acts as a transcription factor to regulate transcription
