The Roaring Twenties
- Fashion
- The 1920s is the decade in which fashion entered the modern era. It was the decade in which women
first abandoned the more restricting fashions of past years and began to wear more comfortable
clothes (such as short skirts or trousers). Men also abandoned highly formal daily attire and even began
to wear athletic clothing for the first time. The suits men wear today are still based, for the most part,
on those worn in the late 1920s. The 1920s are characterized by two distinct periods of fashion. In the
early part of the decade, change was slow, as many were reluctant to adopt new styles. From 1925, the
public passionately embraced the styles associated with the Roaring Twenties. These styles continue to
characterize fashion until 1932.
- Education
- In the 1920's people from many different countries were immigrating to America. These immigrants had to make a new life, and it wasn't
easy. Trying to get an education was not their top priority. As a result, 25 % to 30% of immigrants were illiterate. To try and fix this, new
educational programs were established. In the 1920's new classes had started such as :*Sciences*Physical Education*Home
Economics*Geography*Industrial Arts. Thus expanding the curriculum from the traditional focus which was Reading, Writing and
Arithmetic.
- Increase In Wealth
- The economy grew 42 percent during the 1920s. Canada produced nearly half the world's
output. That's because World War I destroyed most of Europe. New construction almost doubled, from
$6.7 billion to $10.1 billion. Unemployment never rose above the natural rate of around 4 percent.
Average income rose from $6,460 to $8,016 per person. But this prosperity wasn't distributed evenly. In
1922, the top 1 percent of the population received 13.4 percent of total income. By 1929, it earned 14.5
percent.
- Music
- During the Roaring Twenties, music in particular underwent drastic changes that accurately
represented the cultural evolution that was occurring during that decade of the twenties. This
fundamental period of American music resulted in many important changes in song form, dance
music, popular taste, and production that still have a resounding effect on music to this day. The
type of music that took North America by storm was Jazz. The Roaring Twenties was also know as the Jazz era.
- Entertainment
- Entertainment played a large part in the lifestyle of people living in the 1920s. This included literature,
movies, music, sport and various other forms of entertainment. Reading was a favourable pass time in
the decade of the 1920s. Reading was most predominantly done during the colder times of the year as
this is when other activities were restricted. During the current 1920s time the only form of gaining
knowledge was through reading; whether that is through newspapers, magazines or books. Reading
played a large part in a person’s education. Movies were very popular in the 1920s. They were very
exciting for the people who had just experienced the dark times of the world war. Movies were a huge
success as were the movie artists who earned a lot of money from their job. The first movies of the
1920s were silent, with no sound except for a live musical accompaniment which was usually there.
