Spain in the 19th Century: 1808-1833
- 1808 Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Spain.
- The Spanish people rose up against the French invasion, which led to
the War of Independence.
- 1812 The first Spanish Constitution was established on 19 March 1812 by the Cortes de Cádiz.
- It abolished the Inquisition and Absolute monarchy in Spain and Americas, and
established the principles of universal male suffrage, national sovereignty,
constitutional monarchy and freedom of the press, and supported land reform
and free enterprise.
- It was called "La Pepa".
- 1814 Spain won the war, and Fernando VII returned to the Spanish throne.
- He abolished the Constitution and restored absolutism.
He ruled till his death in 1833.
- 1833 After the king’s death, the first Carlist War started.
- Carlos, Fernando VII’s brother, was supported by the absolutists, and
princess Isabel, declared heir, gained the support of the liberals.
