Hypothyroidism
- Thyroid gland does not produce enough
thyroid hormone. Caused by
inflammation of the thyroid gland,
autoimmune disease such as thyroiditis,
arthropathy of the thyroid gland,
medications and iodine imbalance. Could
also be caused by radiation.
- Assess thyroid glands, monitor vital
signs (especially temperature and RR),
encourage patient to drink more
with FBC monitoring, deep breathing
exercises, record daily weight, evaluate
electrolyte levels.
- Fatigue
- Increased sensitivity to cold
- Constipation
- Dry skin
- Low heart rate 'bradycardia'
- Weight gain
- Muscle weakness
- Joint pain and swelling
- Depression
- Irregular periods
- Most commonly caused
by Hashimoto's disease
- Reduce coffee intake as
this affects absorption
of T4
