The Nervous System
& Co-ordination
- The Nervous System consists
of 2 parts
- The Central Nervous System (CNS)
- Brain & Spinal Cord
- The Peripheral Nervous System
- Nerves
- It is composed of cells called neurons that
can carry rapid electrical impulses
- Structure of Neuron
- specialised by being adapted to rapidly
carry electrochemical changes from 1
part of the body to another
- Types of neurons
- Sensory
- Conduct nerve impulses from a
receptor to the CNS
- Relay
- Transmits impulses within the CNS
- Motor
- Conduct nerve impulses from the CNS
to an effector such as a gland or muscle
- Reflexes
- Reflex arc
- sensory neuron ->relay neuron -> motor neuroon
- reflex action
- reflex actions are automatic & rapid
- the body bypasses the brain to
create a quicker response
