Educating rita/invictus
poem (into the world)
- INVICTUS BY WILLIAM ERNEST HENERY
- Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my
unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the
bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but
the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how
strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll. I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my
soul.
- The last two are bothe metaphors are
connotaticy,"I am the master of my fate: I am
the captain of my soul" These two metaphors
are essentially the entire meaning of the
poem;if you are unconquerable only you can
determine your fate. You the are the master and
captain of you destiny. The tone and mood of
the poem and its poet is serious, stong and
deep yet somehow leaves the reader inspired
- The first stanza is mainly henley introducing himself emotionally
- "out of the night that covers me,from pole to pole" Night is a metaphor for suffering of any kind.It is also part of a simile and a hyperbole in which the speaker compares th darkness of his suffering to the blackness of a hellish pit stretching from pole to pole.In line 4 unconquerable establishes the theme and a link with the title
- "it matters not how strait the gate" strait means narrow, restircted which means he must pass through the narrow gate.He beieves he can do it in spite of the punishments that fate has allotted him
- Alliteration in the words "clutch, circumstance and cried &
in not and nor & and bludgeonings, bloody, but, and
unbowed.
- Invictus is from the latin word meaning "unconquerable
- "i am the master of my fate: i am the captain of my soul" this shows they can manage their own life.Life is a struggle and is not absolute. However, with authoirt that they have over their life, they can procceed on the road of their choise.
- EDUCATING RITA
- QOUTES AND TECHNIQUES
- Rita"rouse thou art sick...does thy life destroy (pg 55)
- this shows rita not needing frank anymore as she learnt the poem at summer school and is becoming self effeciant therefore imply frank and rita drifting apart
- Frank"listen to me: you said that i was going to teach you...a guarante of success:RITA:all right.but i just dont like howards bleedin end:frank: then go back to what you...and ill go to the pun (pg 23)
- This quote shows frank putting his foot down to scare rita which in turn encourages her to learn
- Rita:well its immoral:frank:Amoral:
- Shows frank directly teaching rita and cncouraging her learning
- Rita:is that because of me,because of what i said last week:FRANK:My god.You think you've reformed me (pg 16)
- Suggest each character growing more comfertable with each other and devolping a deeper familiarity with each other
- Rita:im coming arent i? its that stpid bleeding door of yours"
- At the beginning of the play.the door is a symbol for the barrier of going into the world. as rita progessess, the door becomes easier to open, untill shes at the final stage of going into the world, when she bursts through the door
- RITA:im a freak, i cant talk to the people i live with anymore.and i cant talk to the likes of them on saturday, or them out there because i cant learn the language.im a half caste"
- This highlights the barriers societly can impose on an indicidual whowants to move into the world
