- Couples mainly wanted boys so they could carry on the family name.
- This then lead to problems such as abortions (sometimes illegally)
- This also lead to orphanages being filled quickly because girls were being disregarded and dumped .
- Couples with only one child gained benefits such as longer maternity leave.
