- Incubation period:
- 7 - 21 days
- Caused by:
- Contact with fresh water, damp soil and vegetation that has been urinated
on by an infected animal with transmission through cuts or mucus
membranes or if water is ingested
- Symptoms
- Include: sudden fever, pain, headache, nausea, vomiting and
diarrhea, conjunctivitis, aching joints, sore throat and
a rash on the skin.
- Can be fatal if untreated!
- Main transmission risk
- Water based (through urine), rodent based and
livestock / pet infection
- Control to minimise risk of infection
- Cattle vaccination, control of rat population, good
occupational hygiene practices, disinfecting
- Treatment with antibiotics
