Zusammenfassung der Ressource
Tropical cyclones (Hurricanes)
- Also called typhoons/cyclones/willywillys
- Develop over warm oceans, where oceans are deep and temp is greater than 26degrees
- Located where ocean temp is at its highest (Autumn)
- Located where 2 Hadley Cells meet, within the trade wind belt between 5 and 20 degrees
latitude North or South of the equator
- Once formed move Westwards (due to spin of the Earth) following unpredictable course and
loose energy when they reach land
- Form when ITCZ has moved to its most Notherly point (in
that area) allowing 2 air masses to merge at low levels
- Unlike depressions hurricanes occur when temperatures, pressure and humidity are uniform over a wide area
- Intense low pressure exists at the Earths surface
- To enable cyclone to move must be a continuous source of
heat to maintain rising air current AND large supply of moisture
which creates condensation+rainfall
- The eye of the storm
- Storm has to be fully developed
- Area 30-50km wide
- Light winds
- Clear skies
- (Anomalous) High pressure
- Increases warming+instability+intensity
- Tropical cyclones referred to as hurricanes-
begin in the Atlantic ocean
- Tropical cyclones referred to as typhoons- begin in Specific ocean(near Asia)
- Life Span
- 7-14 days
- Loses energy as...
- heat source is removed (cooler seas)
- increase in friction (over land)
- reduced supply of water (over land)
- Cyclone's greatest point of destruction is by the coastline
- If they remain over warm water they continue to grow in size and strength
