The Nervous System
  1. The brain and spinal cord form the control center known as the central nervous system
    1. Parts of your nervous system
      1. Brain
        1. Cerebellum
          1. Two hemispheres and has a highly folded surface or cortex. This structure is associated with regulation and coordination of movement, posture, and balance.
          2. Cerebrum
            1. Largest part of the human brain, associated with higher brain function such as thought and action.
            2. Limbic System
              1. Often referred to as the "emotional brain" and is found buried within the cerebrum.
              2. Brain Stem
                1. Underneath the limbic system is the brain stem. This structure is responsible for basic vital life functions such as breathing, heartbeat, and blood pressure.
              3. Spinal Cord
                1. control the majority of the functions of both the body and the mind
                2. Nerves
                  1. Made up of your brain, your spinal cord, and an enormous network of nerves that thread throughout your body
                    1. thin threads of nerve cells, called neurons that run throughout your body.
                  2. Roles of the nervous system
                    1. control center for your entire body
                      1. brain uses information it receives from your nerves
                        1. coordinates all of your actions and reactions
                        2. How the nervous system works with other systems
                          1. Your digestive and excretory systems work with the nervous system in both conscious and unconscious ways.
                          2. Problems that can occur
                            1. Blood supply problems
                              1. Injuries especially injuries to the head and spinal cord.
                                1. anxiety disorders, depression, or psychosis.
                                  1. Exposure to toxins
                                    1. Problems that cause a gradual loss of function
                                    2. Ways to keep your system running smoothly
                                      1. nutritional support
                                        1. Exercise your nervous system
                                        2. What if your nervous system doesn't work right?
                                          1. Neuron impulses inside your brain would stop being made and sent to your organs so they wouldn't work at all, your heart would stop beating, your stomach would stop digesting, and you would die.
                                          2. Importance of the nervous system
                                            1. In charge of sending messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to and from all parts of the body
                                              1. the sense organs wouldn't work such as smell, taste, feel, hear and sight
