STRUCTURE AND FORM
- Binary-Two sections of
music with roughly the
same length.
- Ternary-Ternary form is
3 sections ABA
- Call And Response-One musical phrase is
played by one instrument. Another
instrument then immediatley plays a
responding phrase.
- Rondo-A piece in Rondo form is played in
episodes. The main theme is played and
then followed by a small section of music
and then the main melody comes back
again. ABACADA
- Theme and Variations -This form
means that a piece has a theme that
keeps coming back throughout the
piece however each time the
composer has changed it a little bit.
- Arch Shape-This form means the piece
of music is symmetrical. ABCBA
- Sonata-Sonata form
means that the piece is in
three main sections called
Exposition, Development
and Recapulation.
- Minuet and Trio-Minuet is a
17th-18th century dance
performed at steady pace
and is in 3/4 time. The trio
is the middle section (B) of a
ternary form (ABA). The
minuet (A) is then played
after the trio.
- Scherzo and Trio-In ABA form with a
trio in the middle (B). It provides a
contrast to the lively style scherzo (A)
- Strophic-The
same music is
used for each
verse.
- Through
Composed-Each
verse has
different music.
- Da Capo Aria-Aria means air
(another word for melody) and
this is found usually in opera.
the solo singer is accompanied
by an orchestra.
- Cyclic- the constant repetition of a
certain number of beats or a melodic
pattern that is fixed. each time is is
played, the melody can be changed
through improvisation or by changing
the dynamics or adding/taking away
parts and instruments.
- Popular Song Forms-one common structure of popular song is
where the music is based around a chorus and verse. There could
also be intros, outros and drum or guitar fills. The chorus is
sometimes called the refrain and is the catchy tune that is
remembered. The lyrics also stay the same in the chorus.
- Ground Bass-A melody in the bass line
which is repeated throughout the music.
Harmonies above the ground bass stay
the same.
- Continuo- an accompanying
part used in the baroque
period.
- Cadenza- a solo part at
the end of a piece.
