- melodic inversion
- turning the tune upside down
- the same intervals are kept but they go in the opposite direction
- imitation
- repeat a phrase with slight changes
- one instrument or voice imitates another and then overlaps.

- imitation with modulation
- overlap starts in relative minor
- one octive higher
- retrograde
- playing the tune backwards
- playing the notes in reverse order
- if you switch the notes so they're in reverse order and
inverted it becomes a retrograde inversion
- sequencing
- repeat a pattern, vary the pitch
- keep the pattern start on a
different note, higher or lower.
- rising sequences go up in pitch
- falling sequences go down
- ostinato
- keep one pattern the same, change the rest
- one pattern is played over and over again. the rest of the piece changes around it.
