- 1974 - an amendment added the prohibition against discrimination on the basis OF SEX (GENDER)
- 1988 - amendment added two new classes : Those with HANDICAPS and FAMILIAL STATUS.
- FAMILIAL STATUS Defined by the Fair Housing Act; a characteristic determined by a person's
household where one or more individuals under the age of 18 live with a parent or legal guardian.
Prohibits denying rights to people under the age of 18 who live with a parent or guardian.
- HANDICAPPED STATUS is a physical or mental impairment which limits one or more of persons life
activities.
- STEERING The illegal practice of channeling home seekers to particular areas to maintain the homogeneity of
an area or to change the character of an area.
- BLOCKBUSTING The illegal practice of inducing home-owners to sell their properties by making
representations regarding the entry or prospective entry of persons of a particular race or national
origin into the neighborhood.
- REDLINING Illegal practice of discriminating based on geographic location when providing loans or
insurance coverage
- AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT 1990 Addresses rights of individuals with disabilities in
employment and public accommodations. Designed to eliminate discrimination against
individuals with disabilities by requiring equal access to jobs, public accommodations,
government services, public transportation, and telecommunications. Includes the design of
buildings intended to serve the public.
- THE NEW YORK STATE DIVISION OF HUMAN RIGHTS was created to enforce this important
law.Every individual has an equal opportunity to participate fully in the economic,cultural
and intellectual life of the state.Law prohibits discrimination in
employment,housing,credit,places of public accommodations,educational
institutions,based on age,race,national origin,gender,sexual orientation,marital
status,disability,military status and other specified classes.
