Landforms, Landscape Processes and Weathering.
  1. Weathering.
    1. Physical/Mechanical.
      1. Freeze-Thaw Action.
        1. Water enters through the rocks cracks, freezes expanding the rock and breaking small bit and pieces.
        2. Exfoliation.
          1. When the heat the during the day causes the rock to expand, and the clod of the night causes it to reduce in volume, causing to slowly peel off like an onion.
          2. Usually found in hot tropical deserts.
          3. Chemical
            1. Carbonation.
              1. Water combines with carbon to form carbonic acid, that dissolves limestone.
              2. Oxidation.
                1. Oxygen reacts with metals in rocks to form rust, especially Iron.
                2. Changes the rocks composition.
                3. Biological
                  1. Plants that grow on rocks.
                    1. Roots of plants grow through the rock thus breaking it.
                  2. There is no transportation during weathering.
                  3. Erosion.
                    1. Moving water, ice and wind transport the eroded material away.
                      1. Attrition.
                        1. Material on river bed collides with other materials causing it to break in smaller pieces.
                        2. Corrasion.
                          1. Little rocks move in the bottom hitting stones and breaking them into smaller pieces.
                          2. Corrosion.
                            1. Chemical erosion in the river bed and river banks dissolved by acids in water.
                            2. Hydraulic Action.
                              1. Water hits the rocks, causes other smaller rocks and material to hit the larger rocks until they collapse.
                            3. Transportation.
                              1. Traction.
                                1. Large rocks and boulders are rolled along the bed of a river.
                                2. Saltation.
                                  1. Smaller stone are bounced along the bed of a river in a leap frogging movement.
                                  2. Suspension.
                                    1. This material may discolor the water.
                                      1. Fine material is light enough to be carried by the river.
                                      2. Solution.
                                        1. Some minerals dissolve in the water.
