Distribution and Distributors role
- Budgets
- A company must determine the amount of money they can spend on certain areas of a film, before distribution such as
marketing, this is known as a budget some of the determining factors of this are: Estimated Box Office; Cast and Crew
of the film; Timing of Release; Certification; Audience Research; Estimated Rentals.
- Box office
- To measure a films success you must look at box office, these figures are based on the potential audience/viewer numbers and
the amount or price they may pay to do so basically put its the amount people spend to watch the film, i.e. if 100 people want to
see a film, paying £10.00 each then the box office would be £1000.00 and if the budget or money spent on the film was £500.00
the film would be considered successful as it made a £500.00 profit.
- Rentals
- Exhibitors, rent a copy of a film in order to screen it, such as cinemas, there is obviously a rental price but this is dependent on the price of a
ticket, therefor the price changes from cinema and film from cinema and film this also helps estimate budget and is based on box office estimates.
- Audience
research
- Audience Research is carried out to help estimate box office numbers through test screenings,
inviting a cross section of the audience( different potential groups of audience members) and
asking them to fill out questionaires this helps determine who to market the film at and the box
office estimate based on ticket prices and appeal.
- certification
- This is when a distributor sends a film (in the UK) to the BBFC in order to get a film certified, they give
details of the film a copy of the film and their desired certificate to the BBFC and the BBFC reviews
this and decideds if they can have it or how they can change it to be that certificate an example of a
film not getting their desired certificate is paddington because there is a single use of the word 'bloody'
the certificate for a film can greatly impact the box office and or audience numbers
- Cast and
Crew
- This is one of the biggest factors in attraction of films, because certain stars will attract audiences more than others for instance
a film with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in will be more attractive than one with less known celebrities and garuntees a certain box
office figures of previous films a celebrity has been in determine the 'Bankability' of a star
- timing of release
- There are various factors effecting the release time of a Film, themes, genre, subject matter and audience all play a part of the release time,
for instance a family film will be released in the holidays when families are normally more available to increase the chance of the audience
seeing the film, they also base it on competitors so that films can go head to head for audience members, award ceremonies will also play a
part as some films will be released to coincide to make audiences more likely to see a film
- Film Prints
- the distributors have a final print of the film and they must distribute a copy to each of the exhibitioners this is very expensive to do so must know an
accurate demand for the prints, this is done to maximise profits so the distributors don't want too many copies so the audience are spread too thinly a
film must make 2 and a half times its cost in order to be profitable so there for need a lot of audience members to watch a film in the most profitable
place
