- Started in Italy (16th century)
- Included priests living
under vows, known as clerk
regular & orders for
laypeople
- THEY DEVELOPED CAUSE:
- Dissatisfaction with existing orders of monks
& friars (too established & it lost its zeal
(energy)
- Wanted to express their love in a different way to
withdrawing themseleves from the world (Caring for the
sick, distribution of charity = very important as there were
harvest failure, plagues & war)
- Satisfying the need for change in
the change in the past was by
making new orders (Franciscans,
Augustinians, Dominicans came
about in their criticism of monks &
nuns living in enclosed
communities)
- Eaiser to found a new order
than change an existing one
- All these new orders benefitted
the strengthening of the Catholic
Church
- Provided the lay
people with the
chance to make a
contribution to the
Church through
helping society
- Supported by the
Pope which
increased their
authority
- Positive renewal taking
place in the Catholic
Church
- BUT the new orders were
small & situated mostly in the
North of Italy
