CARTILAGE
- Cartilage is usually found next to Bone
- Its a connective tissue - tough semi-transparent, flexible, elastic
- Matrix or ground substance - GLYCO-PROTEIN and CHONDROITIN
- Cartilage cells -CHONDROCYTES
- Covered in a dense fibrous tissue - PERICHONDRIUM
- No nerves or blood vessels found
- Cartilage is a robust connective tissue
- Re-inforced by COLLAGEN and ELASTIC FIBRES
- There are 3 types:
- HYALINE
- smooth, bluish/white
- Chondrocytes within CELL NESTS
- Covers bone at joint surface
- COSTAL - attaches ribs to Sternum
- Forms part of the Trachea, Larynx and Bronchi
- FUNCTIONS - reduces friction at joints
- MOVEMENT
- SUPPORT - C-SHAPED rings keep trachea and bronchi open
- GROWTH - Longitudinal growth
- WHITE FIBRO CARTILAGE
- SHOCK ABSORBER
- PROVIDES STURDINESS WITHOUT IMPENDING MOVEMENT
- DEEPENS SOCKETS
- ELASTIC CARTILAGE
- Similar to Hyaline
- Contain yellow elastic fibres
- MAINTAINS SHAPE - ie the ear (shape and flexibility
- SUPPORT
- Due to poor access of nutrients Chondrocytes may atrophy
- Water content decreases and small cavities arise
- Cartilage eventually transforms to bone
- REGENERATION AND REPAIR
- Chondrogenic activity of the perichondrium
- is limited to the period of active growth before adulthood
- If cartilage is damaged after the period of active growth
- the defects are filled by Connective tissue or Fibrous Cartilage
