RESTORATION OF QUARRIES

Companies are expected to restore / improve on the original environmental qualities of the area
1. This is called QUARRY RESTORATION
  1. Can begin while work is still in progress
    1. Parts of quarry that have been exhausted can be restored while other parts continued to be worked
    2. most restoration occurs when quarry has ceased
RESTORATION DURING EXTRACTION
1. Drayton Sand & Gravel Quarries are near Chichester in West Sussex
  1. Drayton North has been worked for some time & site is now being extended to incorporate Drayton South
    1. restoration had started before extraction on new site had begun
2. Planting hedgerows/ avenue of oak trees between 2 quarries
3. much of site water logged & will be retained/deepened exsisting lake
RESTORATION AFTER EXTRACTION EG HOLLOW BANKS QUARRY
1. Gravel extracted between 1999 - 2003
2. Owners Tarmac Ltd began restration in 2003
3. 1. Site contoured to create a gently undulating landscape with small ponds bordered by grass /woodland
4. 2. soil added loosened and stones removed
  1. then divided into separate parcels of land
    1. some were sown with grass seeds for pastures - farming
    2. others as woodlands
    3. a number of different habitats were created for birds & animals
5. 3.woodland areas been fenced to prevent trees being damaged by farm animals.
6. 4.20,000 trees & shrubs raised locally were planted in 2004 - 2005
7. 5. Aquatic plants planted at ponds
8. 6.footpaths to provide public access to woods/ponds
