qualities of the area
- This is called QUARRY

- Can begin while work is
still in progress
- Parts of quarry that have
been exhausted can be
restored while other parts
continued to be worked
- most restoration occurs
when quarry has
ceased
- RESTORATION DURING EXTRACTION
- Drayton Sand & Gravel
Quarries are near Chichester
in West Sussex
- Drayton North has been worked for
some time & site is now being
extended to incorporate Drayton
South
- restoration had started before
extraction on new site had begun
- Planting hedgerows/ avenue of
oak trees between 2 quarries
- much of site water logged & will be
retained/deepened exsisting lake
- RESTORATION AFTER EXTRACTION EG
HOLLOW BANKS QUARRY
- Gravel extracted between 1999 -
2003
- Owners Tarmac Ltd began
restration in 2003
- 1. Site contoured to create a gently
undulating landscape with small ponds
bordered by grass /woodland
- 2. soil added loosened and
stones removed
- then divided into separate
parcels of land
- some were sown with grass
seeds for pastures - farming
- others as woodlands
- a number of different
habitats were created for birds & animals
- 3.woodland areas been
fenced to prevent trees being
damaged by farm animals.
- 4.20,000 trees & shrubs
raised locally were planted in
2004 - 2005
- 5. Aquatic plants
planted at ponds
- 6.footpaths to provide
public access to
woods/ponds
