Reducing pollutants
Catalytic converter
Hot car engines produce bad gasses such as Nitrogen dioxide and Carbon Monoxide
Then in the catalytic converter they get processed and come out as Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide
However Carbon dioxide still adds to global warming
Only in expensive cars as is made of raw metals
Therefore it does help, but not very much as there are more cheaper cars than there are expensive cars
2CO + 2NO --> 2C02 + N2
Wet Scrubbing
Used to remove sulpher
We can remove sulphur before we burn coal but that's expensive
So we use wet scrubbing instead
First water is added to get a harmless sulphuric acid
SO2 + 1/2 O2 + H20 --> H2SO3
Then we can either add Calcium Hydroxide or Calcium Carbonate
Calcium Hydroxide
Sulphuric acid + Calcium Hydroxide --> Calcium Sulphate + Water
H2S04 + Ca(OH)2 --> CaSO4 + H20
Calcium Carbonate
Sulphuric acid + Calcium Carbonate --> Calcium Sulphate + Water + Carbon Dioxide
H2SO4 + CaCO3 --> CaSO4 + H20 + CO2
However it does produce CO2 which adds to global warming
Both of these produce Calcium Sulphate (CaSO4) which can be used as plaster
Electrostatic Precipitator
Used to remove particulates (C)
As particulates go up, they are given a negative charge
They carry on up, then becoming attracted to positively charged plates
Because of this, they drop into a container which then disposes of them
Usually found in chimneys
The gasses still carry on out of the chimney
