Localized Representations of Memory
  1. Classical Conditioning
    1. Pairing two stimuli changes the response to one of them
      1. Pavlov (1927)
        1. Dogs, bell, food, saliva
        2. Present a conditioned stimulus (CS)
          1. Presents unconditioned stimulus (UCS)
            1. Automatically elicits the unconditioned response (UCR)
              1. makes new learned response to CS called conditioned response (CR)
          2. the CS and UCS occur at certain times regardless of the individual's behaviour.
          3. Instrumental Conditioning
            1. An individual's response leads to a reinforcer or punishment.
              1. Reinforcer
                1. any event that increases the future probability of the response
                2. Punishment
                  1. an event that suppresses the frequency of the response
                  2. Rat enters one arm of maze, finds froot loops, probability of entering again increases.
                    1. If the rat receives a shock it decreases
                    2. Individual's response determines the outcome
                    3. Some are more difficult to categorise
                      1. Male songbird hears song of his own species and imitates it.
                        1. Song was not paired with anything so isn't classical conditioning
                          1. Learnt without reinforcers or rewards so isn't instrumental conditioning
