complicated
well it is
- Explanation
- A light photon hits the water in the
thylakoid space causing photolysis
splitting water into Oxygen which is
released as a waste gas. Hydrogen ions
are also released as well as an electron.
The electron replaces the one lost in
Photosystem 2
- A light photon hits
photosystem 2 which
excites an electron.
This electron is
received by an
electron receiver.
- The electrons pass through
elctron carriers dwon the
electro potential gradient by a
series of redox reactions. This
provides for hydrogen ions to be
actively transported across the
thylakoid membrane.
- The electron carries onto
photosystem 2 to replace
the lost electrons.
Another light photon hits
photosystem 2 exciting
an electron.
- This electron is received by
an electron receiver which
passes it onto NADP
- The hydrogen ions here move by
chemiosmosis through the stalked
particles. This causes ATPsynthase to
spin phosphorylating ADP + Pi into ATP.
The hydrogen ions then move onto
NADP completing the reduction forming
reduced NADP or NADPH
- This is colour coded to
show you which section
is talking about what
- Other things to note
- This is called non-cyclic phosphorylation. This is
because it is not a cycle (the water is not
replaced so it cannot be a cycle as well as other
substances) and is using the sun (photo bit). We
are also phosphorylating ATP.
- The products of this are Oxygen, NADPH and ATP
- Cyclic phosphorylation
is just the photosystem
on part up to the
electron receiver.
However this electron
moves to the electron
carries shown by the
dotted line. This means
ATP is released but no
NADPH or oxygen
