B4: Photosynthesis
- To make their own food plants take in...
- Carbon Dioxide from the air through pores called Stomata
- Water from the soil through root hairs
- Equations
- carbon dioxide + water ---(sunlight)---> glucose + oxygen
- 6CO2 + 6H2O ---(sunlight)---> C6H12O6 + 6O2
- What does the plant make in photosynthesis?
- Food - this is glucose. Used for respiration and stored
- Oxygen - waste gas that is produced. Used for respiration and given off through the Stomata to surroundings
- Storing Glucose
- Three Advantages...
- Starch can be converted back into glucose for respiration in plant cells
- Starch is insoluble and so will not dissolve in water
- Starch does not affect the water concentration inside the cells
- Plants trap the Sun's energy in Chlorophyll which is in Chloroplasts in their cells
- They use this energy to build up carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen
