Types of Writing Performance
- Imitative, or writing down
- Some forms of dictation fall into this category, although dictation can
serve to teach and test higher-order processing as well.
- Intensive or Controlled
- Guided writing loosens the
teacher's control but still offers
a series of stimulators.
- Self-writing
- Writing with only the self in mind as an audience
- Display Writing
- Writing within the school curricular context is a way of life.
- Real Writing
- Three subcategories illustrate
how reality can be injected:
- Academic. The language Experience Approach
gives groups of students opportunities to
convey genuine information to each other.
- Vocational/technical. Quite a variety of real writing
can take place in classes of students studying English
for advancement in their occupation.
- Personal. In virtually any ESL class, diaries,
letters, post cards, notes, personal messages, and
other informal writing can take place, especially
within the context of an interactive classroom.
