WORLD CITIES
- Definition: Unlink mega-cities they are not defined by
size but instead by INFLUENCE, and this is based on
trade, political strength, innovation and
communications.
- There are 4 main types of world city:
- 1) Major capitals and commercial
cities in developed countries, e.g.
London or Tokyo
- 2) Major capital and commercial cities in
developing countries (semi-periphery), e.g.
Singapore or Rio de Janeiro
- 3) Less important capital and
commercial cities, e.g. Sydney or
Madrid
- 4) Les important developing world cities
e.g. Bangkok or Mexico City
- Characteristics of world cities:
- Political influence - e.g. through the presence
of HQ of international institutions
- Major transport hubs - e.g. Heathrow
as Londons busiest airport
- Economic power - stock exchanges and
HQs of major TNCs
