WORLD CITIES
  1. Definition: Unlink mega-cities they are not defined by size but instead by INFLUENCE, and this is based on trade, political strength, innovation and communications.
    1. There are 4 main types of world city:
      1. 1) Major capitals and commercial cities in developed countries, e.g. London or Tokyo
        1. 2) Major capital and commercial cities in developing countries (semi-periphery), e.g. Singapore or Rio de Janeiro
          1. 3) Less important capital and commercial cities, e.g. Sydney or Madrid
            1. 4) Les important developing world cities e.g. Bangkok or Mexico City
            2. Characteristics of world cities:
              1. Political influence - e.g. through the presence of HQ of international institutions
                1. Major transport hubs - e.g. Heathrow as Londons busiest airport
                  1. Economic power - stock exchanges and HQs of major TNCs
