COMBUSTION ENGINES
- EXTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES
- They started to be used about 300 years ago
- It was used in textile industry, in steam boats and in steam trains
- In a chamber outside the engine called the boiler, fossil fuels were burned to boil water,
resulting in the production of steam.
- THE PRESSURE COULD BE USED TO:
- move a piston
- transform heat energy into mechanical energy
- Steam turbines transform pressurized steam, turning its blades in a rotation movement
- This rotation movement is generally used to generate electricity.
- INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES
- PISTON ENGINES
- Fossil fuel combustion is produced inside the engine and the
explosion achieved are used to move a piston with a lineal motion.
- up and down
- back and forward
- Spark-ignition engines.
- Compression-ignition engines.
- ROTARY ENGINES
- internal combustion engines in which the combustion generates directly a rotary movement. It is not necessary
the use of pistons. The crankshaft remained stationary and the entire cylinder block rotated
around it.
- Wankel engine.
- Gas turbines and jet engines.
