English Language Paper 1:
- Section A:
- assessment objectives for section A are
important as knowing them will help you
answer the questions well as you know what
the examiners are expecting you to do.
- A01: identify and
interpret explicit and
implicit information and
ideas. select and
synthesise ides form
different texts.
- A02: explain and analyse how different writers use structure and
language to achieve effects and interest the reader using relevant
subject terminology.
- A04: evaluate text critically using appropriate textual references.
- Question 1: this is an easy question and doesn't require much thought.
this is a 4 marker and you can get full marks by either paraphrasing the
information from the text or taking the answers directly from it. you are
given a specific place to rea and select your answers from and you need
to ensure that you are using that section and ONLY that section. as well
as highlighting that you should also look at the focus of the question very
carefully. this should only take you five minutes. this question is following
A01 and it lacks any real description, it is a vague and clear answer.
- Question 2: this question is worth 8 marks and so you should spend about 12 minutes answering the question. this question addresses the language
aspect of A02 and the exam board hav given you thee bullet points that will help ypu answer the question. the examiners are looking for a
perceptive anwer and they way in which you write one is to do two paragraphs refering to the sentence structures and literary devices. not only will
you identify them you will highlight the effects of the question. this question will also only be focused on a part of a source but its important to
active read and highlight points that you can comment on. you should try to write three papargraphs one for each bullet point, but start with the
more sophisticated approach, begin with the analysis of sentence forms.
- Question 3: this is a structure question that is also worth 8 marks and so you should spend about 10 minutes on it. you will be using the structural aspect of A02. this question
also offers some bullet points which are extremely important and you want to try and talk about all three. its important to ensure
that you are only mentioning the structural techniques NOT the language. this is a diffucltt question but you need to ensure that
you are explaining the effects on the reader and what these structural techniques you should focus on. the extract you are commenting on will never come from the denouncement.
- Question 4: this is the question that is awarded the most amount of marks on this section of the paper, this question is worth 20 marks and it is in the
form of to what extent. this is a much more open question as you can discuss structure and language where questions 3 and 4 have been specific
enough to only use one of the aspects of A02. in this question you will be given a simple statement and it is best and easier if you agree with it.
remember that the phrase to what extent allows you to disagree with it slightly. you should spend 20 minutes on this question and spend 5 of those
formulating an argument that you can present. the examiners are looking for exceptional detail and so ensure that each of your points are well
developed and you have to link your answers back to the question. this question is marked using the A04 criteria.
- paper 1 is spilt into two different sections and the whole of the paper is worth 90
marks and you are given an hour ad 15 minutes to answer all the questions. section A
consists of 4 different questions , adding to 40 marks in total whereas section B is only
one question and its worth the same number of marks.
- you spend 45 minutes on
section A and 40 minutes on
section B
- section B: this is the creative writing section were you have two choices, you can either write a
descriptive or a narrative, if have the choice chose descriptive as its easier to gain marks.
- descriptive writing: you are usually given an image to describe. in order to achieve a vivid and descriptive image, you should use the
senses. moreover, in order to create tone you have to select your vocabulary carefully and the sentence lengths of the sentences
can help to enforce a tone. it is important to paragraph your answer carefully, you want your writing to flow. in order to ensure
your description is vivid, you have to use the literary devices like similes and personification. including all these features will make
your writing so much stronger.
- narrative writing: this is asking you to write short or the opening of a story, it should still consist of descriptions and senses
however, there should be first person, a small amount of dialect. what's important to remember is that your story shouldn't consist
of action, it is an imaginative response that is realistic. if you are writing the beginning of a story then you need to introduce the
characters and establish the setting. ifyou re writing a full story do not finish with some dramatic event, leave the story with a
simple and reflective statement.
