CREATING MOMENTUMForwarding Action-At the heart of the coaching relationship-Helps clients move from insights to specific steps-The idea that learning and action go hand-in-hand-Coaches should be aware of:------New perspectives, emotions, and behaviors the client might need to succeed------How the client might be able to turn new perspectives, emotions and behaviors into habitual practice-Help the client discover:------what they value (and how those values impact their lives)------how they have been sabotaging themselves------how to create balance (rhythm more than balance...find their natural rhythm or seasons)------how to gain perspective-Helps the client discover what works and what doesn't-Encourages new insights and understanding (the new and unknown)-------Listen for when client is focusing on things that are familiar and "status quo"-Focus on truth------Challenge client to move away from old assumptions-Encourage new actions/activities, even if scary------scary is not necessarily bad------clients are in a good place when they are a little nervous about a new activity-Model forwarding action in your own life as a coachFieldwork-Homework-Part of "Forwarding Action"-Creates accountability for the clients to move forward-Should be specific-Should be client directed-Should take into consideration------results-oriented action------awareness observation------practices to create new habitsResults Oriented Action------easiest and most obvious assignments------directly and clearly further clients movement toward goalAwareness Observation------improve clients ability to take note of habits and patterns------have client observe and record self and others------information gatheringPractice to Create New Habits------specific actions client engages in to build cognitive and behavioral habits------repetition creates new, healthy habits to replace old, unhealthy onesFORWARDING ACTION SKILLS-Accountability-Contracting-Acting "as if"-Stepping into the future-Creating alternative actions and practicesAccountability-All Clients are fully accountable for their actions-Accountability requires regular contact with client-Leads to sustainable results-Client commits to action at the end of session-Coach needs to ask about------action taken------results from actionContracting-Creating a verbal agreement for action-Jointly establish client's plan to move forward-Plan can include general behavior and/or specific action-Can be verbal or in writing-Can ask clients to check in (or update you on progress) between sessionsStepping Into the Future-Similar to "acting as if"-A kind of "preview" of the steps-Client visualizes a detailed view of the future-Helps client see potential possibilities-Helps client see potential obstacles and plan ahead for themCreating Alternative Actions and Choices-Happens as a result of collaboration between coach and client-Takes awareness and ability to "think outside the box"-Requires ability to build problem solving skills-Requires ability to be aware of problems in problem solving------Functional Fixedness: having a fixed perception of what works------Confirmation bias: having a fixed perception of what might be the problem------Mental set: only trying what has worked in the past
