A Christmas Carol - illustrates the differences in social classes Ebenezer Scrooge: is very wealthy but greedy and unhappy. He treats everyone poorly, and is lonely and miserable despite his financial success. Bob Cratchit: Scrooge's clerk. Although poor, he is very humble and generous. Quite amicable and has a large family. The Great Gatsby- the darker side of the wealthy Jay Gatsby- From humble beginnings, but wanted to acquire wealth. Money was not the end goal, but Daisy was. By gaining wealth, he would have Daisy. Represented the American idealism of those from humble beginnings. Daisy Buchanan- enjoys the ease of wealthy living, but seems bitter and apathetic with life. She represented the frivolity and bitterness of the Upper class.

Real Sources of happiness Time with Family and friends creating happy memories and life experiences It's not what you have, but who you have. By not focusing on what you don't have, but rather who you have, life seems more satisfying.

Materialism "The more of it one has the more one wants." Enough is never enough. By achieving happiness through accumulating objects, the end goal is never attainable. The competition with everyone to have the best can be stressful. The recent rise of credit card debt can be attributed to the concept that money and things can bring about true happiness.
