Transport on Maps

Notes: 1. Start with oldest form of transport and work towards the newest2. Give map evidence for each case coupled with theory3. If you cannot find a form of transport on the map do not include it in your answer

Roads:

Start with smallest type of road and work towards the largestTheory for roads includes:1. Tracks: smallest and oldest form of road2. Other Road: usually linked to agriculture3.Third Class Road: Link regional roads together4. Regional roads: Link national primary roads together5. Dual Carriageway: Link major towns/cities together6. National Primary Road: Link major towns/cities together7. Motorway: Largest and most modern type of road

Rivers:

Decide first if the river on the map is navigable (wide and straight enough)Theory: Rivers were used to transport goods and people inland1. Name the river2. Measure its width and give it in your answer to 'prove' that it is navigable

Railways:

Theory could include: 1. Ireland once had an extensive rail system2. Ireland's rail system was built in the 1800's and is now in decline

Regarding grid references1. Give the entry and exit points 2. Give the reference for the train stationDon't forget to comment on disused railway lines if there are any

Canals:

Theory:1. Canals were built in Ireland in the 1800's2. There are two main Canal systems in IrelandRegarding Grid references1. Entrance and exit points2. Comment on which direction it flows

Ports:

Theory:1. Developed in Viking times2. Usually can be identified by harbour walls, lighthouses, ferry routes (give grid references for these)

Airports/Airstrips:

Theory: 1. Developed in 1950's2. Can be identified by runways3. Helipads are sometimes present

Electricity Transmission Lines:

Theory:1. Transport electricity across the landscapeRegarding grid references1. 6 figure grid reference for entry and exit points2. Comment on direction they travel

Masts:

Theory: 1. These transport telecommunications across the landscape
