Frage Antworten
What is the coast? Narrow zone where land meets sea
What is shore? Land btwn high and low watermarks
What are 2 types of waves? Constructive Destructive
Name four types of erosion? Hydraulic action Abrasion Corrosion Attrition
Define Corrasion Bits of rock/sand grind down cliff surface like sandpaper
Define Attrition Rocks smash into rock face -make smaller and rounder.
Define Solution Rock dissolved by acid in water
Define Hydraulic Action Air forced into cracks in rocks and makes cracks bigger causing erosion.
Define Headland A point usually high land jutting out into sea
Define Bays A broad coastal inlet, often with beach
Wave Cut Platform ? Wide gently sloping surface at foot of cliff
Put these statements into order *Repeated collapsing results in cliff retreat forming platform. *Cliffs start to erode when sea crashes up against cliff. *Overtime the cliff is undercut and wave cut notch forms. *The collapsed material is washed away and new notch starts to form. *Eventually the rock above becomes unstable and collapses 5)Repeated collapsing results in cliff retreat forming platform. 1)Cliffs start to erode when sea crashes up against cliff. 2)Overtime the cliff is undercut and wave cut notch forms. 4)The collapsed material is washed away and new notch starts to form. 3)Eventually the rock above becomes unstable and collapses
Name 5 sub aerial processes? 1. Mud Flow 2.Rock Fall 3. Oxidation - chemical weathering 4. Biological weathering 5. Freeze Thaw weathering
What is Traction? The rolling along of largest rocks +boulders along sea/river bed
What is Saltation? Bouncing movement of sand grains and stones along river/sea bed
Transportation Movement of material in sea and along coast by waves
Long Shore Drift? Movement of material along coast
Prevailing Wind? Direction that determines /affects angle that waves take onto shore
What degree does backwash come to shore and why? Back wash comes to shore at 90 degrees due to gravity
Spits ?? Fingers of new land made of sand / shingle jutting out into sea
Tombolo? Spit connecting an island to mainland
Bar ? Formed same way as tombolo, but joins headland to another headland instead of island
What causes Tides ? Gravity from moon pulls water creating a high tide where moon in line. The area that is not in line gets low tides. If sun is in line with moon or opposite each other it creates high or low tides
Coastal Management Issues x 2 1. Preventing/limiting coastal erosion 2. Managing tourist use
Hard Engineering ? Building artificial structures ie sea walls aimed to control natural processes
Soft Engineering ? Sustainable approach to managing the coast without using artificial structures.
