author's purpose the reason for an author's writing Examples: to entertain, to inform, to share, to persuade, to reveal a truth about life (to send a message).
author's viewpoint refers to the author's opinion, ideas of what is important, or attitude toward a topic or subject.
author's perspective how the author feels about something; their view opinion or feelings.
author's tone the approach an author takes toward a topic; author's attitude.
author's style the author's attitude as reflected in the format of the author's written expression.
figurative language Writing or speech that is used to create vivid impressions by illustrating a meaning
alliteration the repetition of a consonant sound at the beginning of words.
idiom an expression that is peculiar to one language and means something different from the literal meaning of its words
hyperbole an extreme exaggeration or overstatement that a writer uses for emphasis
metaphor a figure of speech comparing to unlike things without using "like" or "as"
simile a comparison of two unlike things using the words "like" or "as"
onomatopoeia sound effects Example:buzz, crash, etc.
personification a figure of speech of which a nonhuman thing is given human characteristics
static character changes very little in the story, usually play a minor role in the story
text structure cause and effect, compare and contrast, sequence, problem and solution, main idea and details (description), chronological order (time order)
bandwagon (persuasive technique) "everyone" agrees or participates; tries to persuade everyone to join in and do the same thing
testimonial (persuasive technique) words of an expert or famous person
emotional (persuasive technique) evoke positive feelings toward the reader
repetition (persuasive technique) repeated words or phrases
subjective writing full of opinion
objective writing full of facts
syntax the grammatical arrangement of words in sentences
