Natural Observation Spontaneous behavior is recorded in a natural setting. Controlled Observation Behavior is observed under controlled laboratory conditions (e.g. Bandura Bobo doll).
Participant Observation The observer has direct contact with the group of people they are observing. Non-Participant Observation The researcher does not have direct contact with the people being observed.
Overt Observations The researcher tells the group he or she is conducting research (i.e. they know they are being observed). Covert Observations The researcher pretends to be an ordinary member of the group and observes in secret. There could be ethical problems or deception and consent.
Stratified Sampling A stratified sample is a mini-reproduction of the population. Before sampling, the population is divided. For example, by gender, social class, education level, religion, etc. Then the population is randomly sampled within each category. If 38% of the population is college-educated, then 38% of the sample is randomly selected from the college-educated population. Random sample A random sample is a subset of individuals that are randomly selected from a population. The goal is to obtain a sample that is representative of the larger population.
Volunteer Sampling Participants 'self select' themselves by responding to an invitation. Volunteers could have different characteristics to non volunteers. Convenience Sampling Convenience sampling is a non-probability sampling technique where subjects are selected because of their convenient accessibility and proximity to the researcher.
