Hyperbole An exaggeration e.g. the fish was humungous!
Assonance The repetition of the vowel sound.
Simile Comparing two objects using 'like' or 'as'
Onomatopoeia A word describing the sound e.g. 'woof'
Mood The feelings/emotions of the reader.
Tone Way that the writer is feeling or their emotion.
Personification Giving a non-human object human like characteristics.
Irony the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning e.g. the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.
Pun A play on words - used to create humour.
Alliteration Repetition of the consonant sound within a sentence
Allusion References to a time and place e.g. Jesus.
Imperative Command/instruction e.g. do your homework!
Metaphor Direct comparison using 'is' or 'was'
Cliché An over used phrase e.g. once apon a time.
Anecdote Personal story.
Colloquial language Informal language.
Euphemism A polite way of saying something e.g. he kicked the bucket.
Paradox A statement that is self-contradicting because it often contains two statements that are both true, but in general, cannot be true e.g. I cannot resist anything but temptation.
Juxtaposition Two clauses (parts of sentences) of the opposite meaning put in a sentence to emphasise the difference e.g. Bernard uses black rocks on the white sand in order to build his sign - S.O.S
Pathetic fallacy When the weather reflects a characters mood.
Sibilance Repetition of the 'S' sound in a sentence.
Neologism Made up words for effect.
Oxymoron Two words directly next to each other in a sentence that are opposite in meaning e.g. black and white.
Rhetorical question Question that requires no answer.
Jargon Words that are associated with a certain identity group, such as a particular trade or profession.
Analogy Comparison between two things e.g. the analogy between the heart and a pump.
