What does the play express? | -Past can't be escaped with its almost supernatural return. -Apple tree symbolic of this - wind blows it down - indication that past will return. Almost every character mentions it. -This is emphasised by Kate's dream = she hears plane engine and wind = both indicate resurfacing of past events. |
Inanimate objects | -Act as triggers to remind characters of past. -Kate links fact she tripped over Larry's baseball glove with the fallen tree. -Ann recoils when hears Kate has kept Larry's room the same. = not expecting a big reminder of Larry before his death. -George announces he's wearing his fathers hat = Steve's spectre returns to the house. |
The letter | -Another material reminder of Larry. -Through whole play his presence can be felt although he is absent. -At the end he condemns his fathers actions and this destroys Keller's last vestige of his false account of the shop incident. = he has no choice but to end his life. |
Bert incident | -Difficulty avoiding reminders of the past = jail game shows Keller's humanity without showing that he is tied to the shop incident. -Kate is uncomfortable with the reminder. -Ingrained in the minds of the community that it will be impossible to silence all reminders. |
Ann's return | -Set in motion a chain of events that led to the truth. -Kate and Keller against Chris and Ann's marriage due to link she has with shop incident. -Kate and Keller comfortable telling Ann about shop incident when they're in control = their version is accepted as fact and unchallenged. |
George's return | -Causes far more tumult because he brings an account of past events that disagrees with Kate and Keller. -Has decayed appearance = decay of Deever family. -Kate and Keller nearly suppress his account however they fail due to their different account of Keller's illness. -The impossibility of avoiding the past clearly defeats their attempt to hold it at bay. |
