Rhythm/metre individual beats in a rhythmic cycle are called MATRAS, and BOLS are independent rhythmic parts going against main beats to create syncopation
Rhythm/metre in gat, drone strings of SITAR are strummed to add rhythmic effect called JHALLA
Rhythm/metre sam is first beat of a tal - at end of gat, a TIHAI (short melody/rhythm) is played 3 times which ends on the sam
Structure ALAP: -sitar only -introduces mood and notes of rag -slow, no regular pulse
Structure GAT: -tabla enter -sitar plays fixed composition -sitar & tabla imporvise (sitar based on gat, tabla based on tal) -ends with tihai played 3 times -speeds up
Structure JHALLA: -music is fast -sitar strings strummed for rhythmic excitement
Melody based on a rag associated with the late evening and monsoon season
Instrumentation SITAR: -plucked string instrument with long neck -7 main strings with 12 sympathetic strings that resonate
Instrumentation TANPURA: -no frets -4-6 strings (usually 4) -plays the drone -plays unchangingly throughout
Instrumentation TABLA: -right=dayan - smaller, wooden -left=bayan - larger, metal
