Hormones. Hormones are chemicals that are released into the blood , they are carried in the plasma to varying parts of the body, where they act on target cells. These are particular cells in particular places that need constant adjustment. Hormones are produced in glands, they travel slowly through the body and tend to have a long lasting effect. I.E. Adrenal glands, at the top of the kidney produce adrenaline.
Hormones and nerves do similar things, but there are differences.
Nerves: Very Fast. Act for very short time. Act on a very precise area. Hormones: Slower acting message. Act for a long time. Act in a more general way.
If you have a quick response to something, it is probably nervous. Information needs to passed to effectors really quickly , I.E. pain signals, from your finger, telling you its in a flame. If a response is long lasting it is probably hormonal. when shocked adrenaline is released into the blood stream, causing a fight or flight response, where your body is hyped ready for action. You can tell it's hormonal even though it kicks in pretty quickly, it last a while.
