What is an organic substance? A molecule that has a high proportion of carbon atoms
What is an inorganic substance? Made of molecules/ions with no more than one carbon atom
Why is Mg2+ important in plants? It is a constituent of chlorophyll. No magnesium = no chlorophyll. Without chlorophyll, plants can't photosynthesise and produce glucose (needed for growth)
Why is iron important to humans? It is a constituent of haemoglobin which transports oxygen around the blood
What are phosphate ions used for? Making nucleotides (e.g. ATP) Forming biological membranes from phospholipids
What are Ca2+ ions used for? Bones + teeth in mammals Cell walls in plants
