What is meant by adaptations? Features which help species survive in their environments
What resources to organisms compete for? space, food, water, shelter, mates, light, pollinators, and seed dispensers
Why do organisms have to compete for resources? because they are limited
How do variations within species affect competition? Variations mean an individual can have features that enables it to compete more successfully than others - giving them an advantage
What leads to extinction? If the conditions change too much, no organisms in the population may be able to survive
What causes variation? Mutations in DNA
What causes mutations? substances, radiation, and errors when DNA is copied
What is meant by evolution? Changes in the inherited characteristics of a population over a number of generations
Why are organisms with an advantage more likely to pass on their genes? They are more likely to survive longer, therefore more likely to reproduce, and pass on helpful genetic information to offspring (natural selection)
