Question Answer
What are atoms? The smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist.
How many types of atoms are there? 118 known types.
How many atoms are natural? 98 atoms.
How many atoms are man made? 20 atoms.
What are molecules? A group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction.
What is a crystal lattice? The symmetrical three-dimensional arrangement of atoms inside a crystal.
What is a element? A substance made up of one atom.
What is an anion? An ion that has more electrons than protons and is negatively charged.
What is a cation? An ion that has fewer electrons than protons and is positively charged.
What is a proton? a stable subatomic particle occurring in all atomic nuclei, with a positive electric charge equal in magnitude to that of an electron.
What is a neutron? a subatomic particle of about the same mass as a proton but without an electric charge, present in all atomic nuclei except those of ordinary hydrogen.
What is a subamotic particle? The particles an atom is made up of protons, neutrons and electrons.
What is an electron? A small negatively charged particle ; clouds of electrons surround the nucleus of an atom.
What is an atomic number? The number of protons in a nucleus; the atomic number determines what type of atom it is.
What is a mass number? The number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
What is an ion? An atom that has gained or lost an electron.
What is nucleus? A cluster of neutrons and protons at the centre of the atom.
What is the force that attracts electrons to the nucleus? Electrostatic attraction
What is the force that makes protons repel each other? Electrostatic repulsion
What is the force that holds protons together in the nucleus? Nuclear force
