what is a stimulus? a change in the environment
what is homesostasis? maintaining a stable internal environment
what are the three main components of an automatic control system? receptors, coordination centre and effectors
what does an effector do? detects a stimulus
what is the role of the coordiantion centre? receives and organises the information and organises a response
what does an effector do? produces a response which counteracts the change
what does the nervous system do? detects and reacts to stiumli
what is the CNS? central nervous system- consists of the brain and the spinal cord
what does a sensory neurone do? carries information as electrical impulses from the receptors to the CNS
what does a motor neurone do? the neurones that carry electrical impulses from the CNS to effectors
give examples of effectors? all muscels and glands which respond to nervous impulses
what is a synapse? connection between two neurones
what is a reflex? a rapid, automatic response to a stimulus that doesn't involve the conscious part of the brain
